No, Aussie accent is not due to drunkenness

A ridiculous statement (I won't dignify it with the name of "theory") has been circulating on the internet this week about the origins of the Australian accent.

  1. Thank you. I found the idea to be deliberately provocative and offensive, and thought it was just another way of slandering Australians as just a bunch of uncouth (and now drunkard) former convicts. Elitism comes in many guises and language and accent policing are just two of many.
